Canwood Gallery & Sculpture Park Company Information

General information

In 1973 the gallery owner became seriously ill with leukemia, and was sent down to Bart’s hospital, in London as part of a medical trial. Such was his treatment that at one occasion his weight fell to 5 stone, which for a 30 year old man was quite ominous. When his treatment allowed he decided to venture out and took a black cab and asked where he could go to see something inspirational. The driver took him to the Tate and refused to take any fee. Upon walking into the Tate the first thing he saw and found great inspiration in was the controversial Karl Andre’s bricks. It was the first of many visits. Whether it was the escape and inspiration from the art or the treatment he was the only person in his batch of 12 to survive and to this day .

It has always been his desire to give something back and to build a gallery in Herefordshire where people could experience great art for free.

All profits will be donated to St Barts Medical research.
