Evolution Custom Stringing is the brainchild of me, Chris Nelson. 20+ years ago I was sick of getting really bad and inconstant restrings from local stores and home stringers, many where done by people who had no idea what they where doing and if I wanted any customising done, I had to ship it off out of the county. So to ensure I got what I liked, I purchased a machine just to do my own frames, and it “evolved” from there.

The guy I purchased this of was Ray Gooden, who turned out to be one of the worlds most respected stringers and head of the Wimbledon stringing team for a number of years. Ray showed me how to string and pointed me towards the United States Racquet Stringers Association, which at that time was the only body covering the industry.

It was on joining the USRSA that I realised there was a massive gulf between the quality of stringing and understanding of the playing community in the UK to pretty much the rest of the world. Many players in this country will pay major money for the new game improvement frame and pay no attention to the quality of the stringing or string which has the biggest effect on performance. After all its the strings that make contact, nothing else.

5 years ago I purchased a Babolat Sensor stringing machine because it was the best on the market, and today it is used by stringing teams at tournaments around the world because of its accuracy and consistency and amazing frame clamping system. Although my old machine was good, compared to the Babolat Sensor it was a Ford Fiesta vs a Scuderia Ferrari, the difference in price was just as notable, but you get what you pay for.

But owning a expensive machine does not mean you are a good stringer does it? In 2010 I passed my United Kingdom Racquet Stringers Professional Stringer qualification with Liam Nolan, the head of UKRSA and another world respected professional stringer. So what makes me better than the guy down the road, simple. Although stringing a racquet is not rocket science, getting multiple frames exactly the same takes precision and consistency. A lot of that is the quality of the machine (I have that), but how the technician strings a frame has a massive outcome in the end product. So much so, at professional events top pro's like to have the racquets done on the same machine by the same stringer. I can do just that, and when I give a frame back to a customer you can have no doubts it will be treated exactly the same as if I was stringing for the worlds best.
