Sherborne Museum Company Information

General information

We are a vibrant, community-based museum entirely run by volunteers for the purpose of preserving and displaying items of local heritage. The first museum of its type in Dorset to become fully accredited, it was founded in 1968 by members of Sherborne Historical Society and now occupies a Grade II listed building, the Gatehouse and Almonry of the former Benedictine Abbey, conveniently placed in th
e centre of town close to other buildings of historical interest.
Our collections illustrate the geological, historical, social and industrial development of Sherborne and the surrounding villages, as well as their natural history. Highlights include a unique medieval wall-painting, an intriguing 17th century puzzle box, a touch-screen version of the fabulously illuminated Sherborne Missal, tools of forgotten trades and agricultural practices, silk and gloving displays, the exquisite early paintings of Edwardian botanical artist Diana Ruth Wilson and a famous doll’s house. Our photographic collection, together with our postcards and paintings form one of the largest private collections of images of a small town anywhere in the country. Many of these images are currently being placed on a computerised database for easy access by the public and for reproduction if desired.
We want children to enjoy our Museum and aim to have a corner in every room with child-friendly exhibits, handling boxes and dressing up opportunities. We organise family-oriented events and workshops and have signed up to the “Kids in Museums” manifesto, pledging to listen to what children say they want to see and do and act upon it. We have strong ties with local schools, who put on their own annual exhibitions at the Museum and we actively encourage school visits and students needing work experience. In 2012 we were awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge which guarantees a safe and enriching museum experience for young people.
We are in the process of creating a Sensory Trail to enhance the visit for all ages and abilities and there is a virtual tour of the upper galleries for those unable to take the stairs. Out of hours visits can be arranged by appointment.
