General information
Toghal is a homeware company that reinterprets heritage African designs to create vibrant yet contemporary textiles. We believe in borrowing from the past, while paying homage to many nameless designers from a variety of aesthetic traditions. We experiment with different types of fabrics and materials on which we print our designs.
Toghal means ‘to sit’ in Wollof, a language spoken in Senegambia, on the West coast of Africa. It evokes a sense of making yourself comfortable, at home. The name sounds close to Mughal, a rich imperial tradition from Central Asia, and also toga, with a clean classical complexity aligned with the Roman era. Toghal aims to make homeware that can help you create your own nest, borrowing from traditions, blending the old and the new.
Toghal has been an idea in the making for over a year, and there is a special thrill in unveiling our very first collection in 2013. We will be releasing different products in our range over the next few months, and hope we can entice you to join us on the journey.
