General information
Fountains Abbey has stood in the Skell Valley for more than 800 years, nestled away from the outside world. The monks first came in 1132 with the aim to start a new abbey - one that was truly devout. The following years saw the abbey grow, through both very tough and prosperous times.
The gardens came much later - after the ruin of the abbey. Created by John Aislabie in 1718, the gardens were a wonderful place for their visitors to spend the day, touring the many follies throughout the grounds. The water gardens were recognised as being an important part of our history in 1986 and became the UK's twelfth World Heritage Site.
The abbey and gardens are now open for you to come and enjoy. Visit the Porter's Lodge by the abbey to find out all about the abbey's rich history, and enjoy an afternoon touring the gardens.
There is also Fountains Hall, the Mill, Swanley Grange, the deer park and St Mary's church to explore, as well as wonderful walking trails. Head to our website to find out more information about all you can do on your visit.
