General information

Since she was a child, Thelma Hughes has been fascinated by fabrics. Now head of a booming interiors and soft-furnishings business, her mission is to make your home beautiful.
From the age of 8, Thelma's journey began when her father dismantled her Christmas present right before her eyes, a brand new sewing machine! He turned to her and said "You know how to use a sewing machine, but I want you to put it back together piece by piece. This way you will know how it works and how to fix it if there is a problem" It was from this day that Thelma's journey began as one of the most sought after designers in the North West. Encouraged by her big sister she started sewing all the time, making clothes for people in school and friends. After a tailoring course Thelma kept on making clothes then one day decided to make a pair of curtains. After another course, Thelma and her sister opened "Swags and Tales" in Birkdale Village. When her sister Val retired she set up Stewart Interiors.

Thelma has attracted many commissions over the years. From the sporting world to stately homes, hotels, shop interiors and the homes of local residents. All desiring the highest quality interiors.

Design and project management of a twenty seven bedroom nursing home, creating a five star hotel for residents
The new interior of fashion boutique Coco Boutique in Wayfarers Arcade, Southport.

Complementing the interior design business, Thelma and her team manufacture soft furnishings.
From hand sown interlined curtains and pelmets, to made to measure quilts, bedspreads, cushions and throws as well as bespoke upholstery, repair and renovation. All Stewart Interiors products are manufactured in house, helping to keep cost down and ensuring bespoke products of the highest quality. Thelma's manufacturing expertise sees many other interior designers contracted to her to produce their soft furnishing designs.
