Barra Bronzes Free Range Turkeys

Free Range
At Lochend of Barra we are producing free range turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. We have specially selected the Wiral and Hockenhull Black turkeys as these birds love to forage naturally and when hung provide a more flavour than other breeds.
The turkeys are kept in one of our large barns each night and are bedded with fresh straw from our farm each day.

Their Diet
These Turkeys are grown slowly to full maturity and fed on a cereal based diet. They enjoy roaming around the fertile land of Lochend of Barra where they forage for foods. They eat natural vegetation and grass, along with a cereal based diet which contains no animal proteins or growth promoters.

Hand Plucking
At Lochend of Barra we take the extra effort to hand pluck each of our turkeys. Gordon Ramsey explains that “most turkeys are wet plucked by a machine, its quicker but it takes off a top layer of the skin that holds in the flavour which gives the turkey a crispy finish when cooked. Vital.” Hand plucking also allows us to hang each turkey for longer. While the bird hangs, a natural enzyme breaks down the tissue which improves the texture and flavour of each bird. This is essential to improving the flavour and texture of the meat and ensures that the most special meal of the year is a memorable one.

Our turkeys will be individually boxed and will come with cooking intructions.
