Claydon House is an unexpected jewel tucked away in the heart of Buckinghamshire countryside. Claydon House with its graceful appearance, peaceful setting and extraordinary Rococo interiors is a rich treasure trove with a fascinating history just waiting to be explored.
* Georgian country house, decorated in fine Chinoise and rococo style
* Intricate wood-carvings and a spectacular parquetry staircase
* Lovely elevated setting in unspoilt countryside
* Mementoes of Florence Nightingale who was once a regular visitor
* Fascinating associations with the Civil War and the Crimean War
Claydon House today stands but a shadow of its noble owners’ ambitions from the middle of the 18th century, a grand country house that never quite was.
Within our walls, spectacular spaces delight and surprise. Elaborate decoration, carved from wood or cast in plaster take you on a journey through eighteenth century ‘style’. Claydon was created under the ethos that money was no object, only the finest would do… but then the money ran out.
Ours is the story of one family, The Verneys, who have owned the estates at Claydon since the 1460’s. Within the confines of a remarkable eighteenth century folly one can venture back and forth in time and engage in the remarkable story of one families fluctuating fortunes.
The Verney family and the National Trust are delighted to share this remarkable place with you.
