The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, (CIPS), is an international education and qualification body representing purchasing and supply chain professionals. CIPS qualifications are the recognised industry standard both in the UK and Internationally.

Passing levels 4-5-6 enables the student to apply for the full prestigious use the MCIPS accreditation behind your name and attend a graduation ceremony in recognition of your achievement.

All Lecturers on the OPT CIPS programme are fully qualified with both professional and teaching qualifications. We also all have lots of real-world experience which will play a major role in the teaching sessions.

Location and facilities

OPT is based at the Abingdon Business Centre, 7 Nuffield Way. Abingdon.OX14 1RL

The Centre offers air-conditioned rooms, kitchen facilities and ample secure parking. It is very close to the Abingdon South A34 junction with several cafes and food outlets nearby.

Some course text books will also be available to borrow from the centre. Or you may consider purchasing a study text for each unit. Or you can purchase the books for one whole level (5 books and five mini study guides) at a discounted price from the CIPS Bookshop. (See link below). .

Our lecturing staff includes:

Ian Davies BA Hons. MCIPS PGCE MSc.

Ian worked at Abingdon and Witney College delivering CIPS courses for 12 years developing into being declared a’ Highly Commended’ CIPS provider of its courses. Before that he had a variety of Buyer, Senior Buyer and Management roles. He has a Masters Degree in Procurement and is a qualified teacher. He has delivered training in the private, public and third sectors for a wide variety of clients. Ian’s specialisms include contracts and negotiation.

Martin Poulson AFA, MBA, MIfL, Cert Ed

Martin has a wealth of experience in the commercial world and in education, including strategic leadership & management roles in a global procurement company. He has a Masters Degree in Business and is a qualified teacher He negotiated the first joint venture with the largest South African Plc under the post-apartheid Black Empowerment Programme. He had lead responsibility for first PFI contract, £350m/25-year facilities management for Falkirk Schools, Scotland. Martin’s specialisms include Strategy and Finance.

CIPS Foundation Diploma (Level 4)

Entry requirements

This is the OPT ‘entry’ level qualification for our CIPS programmes. Prospective students would need to either be over 21 with relevant experience or fewer than 21 would be required to have 2 ‘A’ levels or equivalent. If you are unsure please if this is right for you please contact us for a discussion.

At level 4 you will learn many of the skills that you will need in your role as a supply chain/purchasing professional. This level also provides the ‘skills base’ to be built upon at levels 5 & 6.

Many organisations now insist that their supply chain staff obtain the CIPS Foundation Diploma of CIPS.

The course consists of 5 modules on Tuesdays1-45pm to 5pm and (or) 6pmto 9-15pm.

The Diploma (Level4) Purchasing and Supply requires you to complete five compulsory units:
• Effective negotiation in purchasing and supply
• Developing contracts in purchasing and supply
• Measuring purchasing performance
• Managing purchasing and supply relationships
• Purchasing contexts
Each of these units is assessed by an exam Students will also be required to some work outside of class/ this could be producing reports and of course time for revision.


The first session will also include student induction to CIPS and to OPT. Training.

The units are ‘rotated’ from afternoon to evening each year to mean that the qualification can be done either all during the day or all in the Evenings over a two year period.

CIPS Advanced Diploma in Purchasing and Supply (level 5)

Entry requirements

It is recommended that you have completed the CIPS Foundation Diploma (Level 4). The Advanced Diploma builds upon students skills and experiences from the foundation Diploma.
The Advanced Diploma in Purchasing and Supply requires learners to complete five units consisting of three compulsory core units and a choice of six optional units, of which you must complete two.
The compulsory units are:
• Management in the purchasing function
• Risk management and supply chain vulnerability
• Improving supply chain performance
Optional units offered at OPT:
• Marketing for purchasers
• Storage and distribution

The course consists of 5 modules and is on a Wednesday Afternoon /Evening the first session will also include student induction to CIPS and the centre.

CIPS Graduate Diploma in Purchasing & Supply (level 6)

Entry requirements

It is advised that you have completed the CIPS Advanced Diploma (Level5).
The Supply Chain Management in Practice unit (a case study unit)
is an integrative unit and is best tackled at the end of the your studies. Completion of level 6 allows you to apply to use the MCIPS letters.
The Graduate Diploma has five units. Three of these are compulsory core units which must be completed (it is not possible to apply for an exemption from these three units).When the Graduate Diploma has been successfully completed, you may apply to become a full Member of CIPS which entitles you to use the designation, MCIPS after your name
The compulsory core units are:
• Leading and influencing in purchasing
• Strategic supply chain management
• Supply chain management in practice - integrative unit

• Advanced project management

‘Advanced’ Level 5 Units are £500* or £2350 for all five units
‘Graduate’ Level 6 Units are £500* or £2350 for all five units
